Quick OpenClaw Setup Guide | Under One Minute
Get OpenClaw running with WhatsApp in under a minute. One install command, a guided setup wizard, and a QR code scan — that's all it takes.
TL;DR — What You'll Get
- OpenClaw installed and configured with Anthropic Claude
- WhatsApp connected as your messaging channel
- A working AI assistant you can message from your phone
Prerequisites
- Node.js 22+ — or skip this, the curl installer handles it automatically
- Anthropic API key — get one at console.anthropic.com
- WhatsApp — installed on your phone for QR code linking
1 Install OpenClaw
Run this command to download and install OpenClaw. It handles Node.js and all dependencies automatically on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
curl -fsSL https://openclaw.ai/install.sh | bashAfter installation completes, the onboarding wizard will start automatically. If you need to restart it later, run openclaw onboard.
2 Review & Accept Security Risks
OpenClaw will display a security disclaimer explaining the risks of running an AI assistant connected to your messaging channels.
Read the disclaimer carefully. It outlines important security considerations about giving an AI agent access to your messaging accounts. If you understand and accept the risks, select Yes to continue.
3 Configure Quick Start with Anthropic
The onboarding wizard will walk you through a series of configuration prompts. Select the following options when prompted:
- 1 Onboarding mode: Select
Quick Start - 2 Model authentication provider: Select
Anthropic - 3 Identification method: Select
Anthropic API Key - 4 API Key: Paste your Anthropic API key when prompted
We recommend Anthropic as the provider — Claude models offer the best balance of capability and safety for AI assistants. Get your API key at console.anthropic.com.
4 Connect WhatsApp
The wizard will ask if you want to configure chat channels. Follow these steps:
- 1 When asked "Configure chat channels?", select
Yes - 2 From the available options (Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, Slack), select
WhatsApp - 3 A QR code will appear in your terminal
- 4 Open WhatsApp on your phone, go to Settings → Linked Devices → Link a Device
- 5 Scan the QR code from your terminal with your phone's camera
Once scanned, WhatsApp will link to OpenClaw — just like connecting WhatsApp Web. The connection is established and your setup is complete.
5 Send a Test Message
Open WhatsApp and send a message to your linked number. If everything is working, you'll get a response powered by Claude.
You're done! Your OpenClaw assistant is now live on WhatsApp. Try sending "Hello, what can you do?" to get started.
